Q. What is Tulip Day?
An event working toward a society in which LGBTQ+ people — lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and other sexual minorities — can live with pride. We support LGBTQ+ people and their families, help the wider public and companies deepen accurate knowledge and understanding of LGBTQ+ issues, work to establish the human rights of LGBTQ+ people, and contribute to a society in which every person’s individuality and human rights are respected.
Q. Why “Tulip Day”?
The Japanese children’s song about tulips has the line “red, white, yellow — every flower you look at is beautiful.” The name carries the wish for a day on which every personality can shine, without distinction.
Q. Why 4 April?
3 March is Hinamatsuri, the festival for girls, and 5 May is Children’s Day, traditionally for boys. We chose 4 April — the midpoint between the two — as a day everyone can celebrate regardless of gender. In Japanese, “4 April” can also be read as shiawase, happiness.
